Bournville Netball Club (“BNC”) is a Birmingham based Netball Club, offering competitive Netball in the Regional Netball League and the Birmingham Netball League. We also offer Intermediate Netball to girls aged 11-15.
We involve volunteers in our Club in a wide range of matters from coaching and umpiring to the general running of the Club.
All volunteers are supported by the Club Volunteer Coordinator (“CVC”), the Club Committee and their assistance is greatly appreciated by all members of the Club.
We do not advertise for volunteers outside the club, as the volunteers we use are all members of the Club.
The Committee will identify roles that need to be filled and will then discuss as a committee who we believe in the club could fill this role. The Chair and CVC will then discuss the role and what is required with the person the committee has identified. If the person identified then accepts the role, the committee would assist them and support them in their role.
As we use members of the club to fill the volunteer roles, we do not require application forms or need to interview volunteers.
If we decided to take on volunteers from outside of the club in the future, then we would follow a screening procedure. This would include obtaining at least two references, completing a volunteer registration form and self disclosure form and if necessary, complete a Criminal Records Bureau (“CRB”) In addition through our Netball School/Link agreement with Edgbaston High School we have an arrangement for Volunteer promotion and recruitment.
Equity Policy Statement
BNC is committed to ensuring that equity is incorporated across all aspects of its development. In doing so it acknowledges and adopts the following Sport England definition of sports equity:
Sports equity is about fairness in sport, equality of access, recognising inequalities and taking steps to address them. It is about changing the culture and structure of sport to ensure it becomes equally accessible to everyone in society.
BNC respects the rights, dignity and worth of every person and will treat everyone equally within the context of their sport, regardless of age, ability, gender, race, ethnicity, religious belief, sexuality or social/economic status.
The club is committed to everyone having the right to enjoy their sport in an environment free from threat of intimidation, harassment and abuse.
All club members have a responsibility to oppose discriminatory behaviour and promote equality of opportunity.
BNC will deal with any incidence of discriminatory behaviour seriously, according to club disciplinary procedures.
Induction and Training
As volunteers are members of the Club, there is no set induction policy. However, as members they receive club emails that provide them with details of the club and are all bound by the club’s constitution.
All new members of the club (and therefore possible volunteers) are introduced to the committee as soon as possible and are made aware of who to contact if they have any concerns or queries.
All members/volunteers are advised of how to claim back expenses they incur, are provided with the Clubs Code of Conduct and Constitution.
With regards to training, if a new volunteer takes over a role from a previous volunteer, then the previous volunteer will train the new volunteer. They will provide them with guidance as to what the role entails and we will arrange that the new volunteer shadow the previous volunteer. They will also be invited to a committee meeting to meet the committee on a more formal basis.
All volunteers and members are entitled to out of pocket expenses and are made aware of how to claim such expenses. We have an expenses form and volunteers are encouraged to complete this for expenses they incur and hand this to the Chair of the Club for approval and to the Treasurer for payment.
Supervision and Support
The CVC and the Chairperson of the Club provide the main supervision and support to all volunteers. However, all committee members provide support to all volunteers.
As all the volunteers in the Club are members of the Club, each member is insured through All England Netball.
Health and Safety
Members/volunteers are referred to the Venue Risk Assessment and the Emergency Procedure of the venue. All members/volunteers are made aware of the First Aiders within the Club and all teams are provided with a First Aid kit, which is updated each season.
Problem Solving Procedures
As all volunteers are members of the club, if there are problems or issues then all volunteers are encouraged to speak to the CVC and/or Chair of the Club. If a problem arose, then the matter would be discussed between the volunteer, the CVC and the Chair of the Club. If the matter could not be resolved then the matter would be discussed at a committee meeting with all committee members resolving the issue.
The volunteers/members are also referred to the Discipline and Appeals section of the Constitution, which is as follows:
Discipline and Appeals
All complaints regarding the behaviours of members shall be submitted to the Committee Secretary.
The Management Committee will meet to hear complaints within 7 days of a complaint being lodged. The Management Committee has the power to take appropriate disciplinary action including termination of membership of any person whose action brings BNC or the game of netball into disrepute.
The outcome of the disciplinary hearing should be notified in writing to the person who lodged the complaint and the member against whom the complaint was made within 7 days of the hearing
There will be the right of appeal to the Management Committee following the disciplinary action being announced. The Management Committee should consider the appeal within 7 days of the Committee Secretary receiving the appeal
Following any appeal hearing, the Management Committee’s decision is final.
